Every painting has a story. Point your phone and read it.

PaintedBy identifies paintings, drawings and prints from a single photo. You get the artist, the period, the style, and one thing worth knowing about the work, in a card that reads like a museum label.

How it works

Three seconds from curiosity to context.

01 · POINT

Open PaintedBy

The camera is ready the moment the app opens. Frame the painting, drawing or print, and keep glare off the glass.

02 · SCAN

Tap the shutter

PaintedBy reads the brushwork, palette and composition, and matches what it sees against the history of art.

03 · READ

Read the label

Artist, title, date, movement, medium, where to see it, and one fact that changes how you look at it.

Katsushika Hokusai
Japanese, 1760–1849
The Great Wave off Kanagawa
c. 1831
Woodblock print; ink and colour on paper

One of the early Japanese prints to use Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment newly imported from Europe.
What you get

The label you wish every wall had.

Museums fit a whole artwork onto a few lines of text. PaintedBy gives you that label for any work you photograph, then goes one step further.

  • WhoThe artist and their dates, or an honest “unknown” with the likely school or circle.
  • WhenThe year, the period, and the movement it belongs to.
  • HowThe medium and the visual traits to look for: impasto, sfumato, flat colour, gold leaf.
  • WhyA fact or story about the work, and related pieces to explore next.
Built for real galleries

Low-light mode

Galleries are dark on purpose. PaintedBy brightens your photo before reading it, with no flash glare on varnished paint.

Honest confidence

Every result shows how sure PaintedBy is. If a work isn't one it knows, it says so and estimates the style and period instead of inventing a name.

Your photos stay yours

PaintedBy reads the photo and lets it go. Your history keeps the details and the artwork's colours, not the picture, so it never fills your phone.

Questions

Before you ask.

Why “PaintedBy”?

Because it is the first question in front of any artwork: who painted this? Old masters answered it with one Latin word beside their signature, “pinxit”, meaning “painted by”. PaintedBy answers it for any artwork you photograph, and tells you the story behind the name.

When is PaintedBy launching?

PaintedBy is in development now. Leave your email above and we'll send one message the day it's available on the App Store and Google Play.

What kind of art can it recognise?

Paintings, drawings and prints, from the Renaissance to the twentieth century and beyond. Famous works are identified by name. Lesser-known works get an estimate of their style, period and technique, clearly marked as an estimate.

Does it work in museums?

Yes. That's what it's built for. Low-light mode handles dim galleries, and you never need flash. Always follow each museum's photography rules.

Will it cost anything?

Pricing will be announced at launch. Everyone on the list will hear first.
